A Short History of Mother’s Day
The origins of Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient times. The early Greeks, Egyptians, and other ancient civilisations all celebrated the mother-figure – most with raucous festivals that continued for days! The mother festival spread to Rome and became a Christian feast, celebrated throughout the empire on the fourth Sunday of Lent, in the church that people were baptised in (known as their mother church).
The practice grew in the Middle Ages, and became a mini-holiday from the deprivations of Lent, celebrated with a large family meal and the mother as guest of honour. Known at that time as “Mothering Day”, this was the period that the tradition of giving flowers and gifts to mothers began. Mother’s Day in Europe continues to be celebrated on a Sunday during Lent, and is now a major day of thanks and gratitude to mothers everywhere.
The reason that Mother’s Day is celebrated in June in the US is because the Mother’s Day Lenten tradition was never imported into America by the early protestant European settlers. It took the dedication and concerted campaign of two extraordinary women in late 1800s and early 1900s (Julia Ward Howe and Anna M Jarvis) to establish Mother’s Day in the US as a day of both the celebration of motherhood, and as day of peace and anti-war sentiment. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made Mothers Day a national day of observance on the second Sunday of May. Mother’s Day in the USA is now a $15 billion industry and one of the busiest days of the year for florists and restaurants.
