Sabering a Bottle of Champagne
If you are a fan of using a sword to slice off the top off a bottle of champagne (knowing as “sabering”), follow our easy guide to
how to master this art of dramatic gesture!
1. Make sure champagne bottle has been well chilled. Contrary to what you might expect, the bottle should not shaken.
2. Remove the foil from the top of the bottle, unwrap and remove the cork wire, and dry teh top of the bottle with a cloth.
3. Locate the crease, which is the seam that joins the two halves of the bottle together. The weakest point of the bottle is where this seam meets the neck lip of the bottle – this is where the sword needs to strike.
4. Hold the bottle firmly and at a 45 degree angle upwards (NB make absolutely sure the bottle is pointed in a safe direction).
5. Lay the back, blunt side of the sword against the bottle’s neck lip (the blunt, non-cutting edge!)
6. Quickly slide the knife down the seam, towards the lip that holds the cork in one firm, continuous movement.
7. Hey presto – a dramatic (and safe) stunt to impress your guests!
